Nashville TN Oil Changes & Oil Filter Replacements
Open the hood of your car and pull the oil dipstick. Is your motor oil honey-colored and translucent, slightly darker, or the color of black coffee?
If the oil is dark, you probably know it needs to be changed. But how does motor oil get so dirty over time?
Your engine’s internal moving parts rely on a thin film of motor oil to provide lubrication and cut friction and wear – without it, the engine would quickly overheat to a point where parts would actually weld to each other and seize up. Normal operation means that microscopic metal shavings make their way into the oil, along with carbon, acids and water vapor from combustion. The detergents and dispersants in the oil suspend these contaminants so they can be trapped in the oil filter’s paper pleats. In time, though, the oil filter becomes saturated and buildups of sludge and carbon can begin to form on internal engine assemblies.
For years, oil companies and quick-change shops pushed the “3,000-mile rule” for oil changes. Today’s newer formulations of conventional motor oil can easily go 5,000 miles between changes with no increase in engine wear. For engines with more than 80,000 miles on them, high-mileage synthetic blend oil is a great choice. Synthetic blend high-mileage oils contain friction modifiers and viscosity agents that are designed for the looser internal tolerances of a worn-in engine. They also feature seal conditioners to help swell dried-out, shrunken gaskets and head off oil leaks.
Manufacturers now recommend full synthetic oil for all new cars, and for good reason. Synthetic oil cuts friction and enhances engine protection better than conventional oil. It’s more pure and stable at the molecular level, meaning it doesn’t thin out at high temperatures or become thicker in extreme cold. At startup, this is especially important – oil needs to be able to quickly circulate through the entire engine, including upper assemblies.
At American Tire Company, our ASE-certified techs do a lot of oil changes – it’s one of the most important parts of routine preventive maintenance for any vehicle. If your oil is a dirty dark brown with an acrid smell to it, don’t hesitate – make an appointment with us for your next oil change!
